Ok before I started work on my exchange gift I was working on this. atm it doesn't even have a base color lol

BUT I thought you could help me get into a creative flow and keep this going before I give up. Before I move to color.... do you see anything I should work on?

Image

love the way you pixel hair.... though I don't want to totally copy you I think you could give me tips on that first

Well, obviously you still need to do that one hand ;)
but as for hair goes yours looks a little stiff. This isn't the best sketch but it makes it easier to explain.
Image
The hair you have is close but it doesn't have enough weight or flow, it looks sort of jelled, on the right side of her head i'd suggest bringing it down behind her ear/head a bit so the hair looks more like it curves with her face.

Sorry if that's a sucky explanation xD

*Edit*
As a personal interest on it i'd also suggest narrowing each side of the neck by 1 or 2 pixels, but if you decide not to it also looks fine as it is

That looks loads better xD the one strand above her nose still looks a bit thick though, and as for hands I could suggest have her hand up like she is holding a glass... or drop it back down. another thing I noticed but forgot about, her jean folds near her crotch. the shoulder curve more with the leg instead of dropping down like that

the hair is very scribbley ;) the white of her shirt is a little high contrast, and the line of her lower lip looks a little uneven on the right side

hmmm... see what your saying about the shirt. how's this look?
Also I know it looked scribbley but I just did that as a color test.
Image

The purple was just some random color and I ended up keep it as well as the blue lines

still working on the style/shading of the hair.

hmm the bangs look a little glued to her head here.

The way your hair currently is it looks like she has multiple part spots, for some hair styles/placements thats ok, but the way it is in this is causing a glued on affect

Image

I'd suggest creating a central spot where the hair comes from, and put it on the opposite side of where the mass of her hair is, and also start creating your shadows on one side, from the shirt and face there appears to be a lefthand light source, but with the hair it seems to be from the front

Image
here's an example of where I would place the lights and shadows of it all

yeah that looks better, and that bow is adorable!

The white of the shirt also still looks a bit high contrast between the highlights and the main color, maybe lighten the middle color

I personally think the bow is adorable , and has great placement with how the hair is.. maybe make it match the color of the pants? and as for the shirt, maybe make it so the highlight color is closer to the main color?

sorry for lat-ish reply, slept all day and then just got back from store a bit ago

Image

here's 2 ways I'd do it, either lighten the entire highlight area, so it is a softer highlight, or blend the highlights so that the enter the darker gray better, shading white is hard, and using pure white against a gray usually requires it being smoothed, unless it is a small/thin area

*edit*
since i'm supposed to be teaching I figure I might as well explain this

the higher contrast of the white adds a more plastic look, if you had a different collor pallet, and less of the highlight then it probably would look fine, but looking at the white next to the grays plain out makes it look plastic, or painted

sorry if thats not the best explanation, I am a sucky teacher. def not a career choice for me in the future xD

yeah that def looks better! something i've learned, using pure white in white clothes doesn't always work O_o xD

oh, I just realized, back to the hair (i swear i'm obsessed with hair XD)
The contrast from where the highlights reach the normal color for the hair is a bit to sharp, you could try anti-alising, or putting a color along the edge pixels to smooth the colors out, and also add some highlights in the area near her roots

Image
red shows approximately the area I meant by highlights xD

I hope this doesn't sound silly but I try and use the least colors as I can to stay as true to traditonal pixelart as I can. Hope this helps?

hmm, if you want to use a lower amount of colors i'd suggest dithering to smooth it out

here are a couple tutorials
http://kitted.deviantart.com/art/Pixel- ... orial&qo=5
http://kitted.deviantart.com/art/DITHER ... orial&qo=4

and you can find more by searching "dithering tutorial" on deviantart :0

...
when there is a lot of contrast between two colors in shadows it usually looks a little harsh and is better off if dithered to smooth it out and make it softer, and have a smoother transaction between colors

idk If I want to dither, it's not something I do too often. Only on certain styles. Does it look that harsh? I tried to add more "depth" to her hair but it started to look too realistic. I want more of a cell-shaded look.

You have been so very helpful! I hate to disagree about dithering.

hehe its ok, I personally don't like dithering.. I enjoy looking at dolls that are well dithered, but I hate doing it myself. and I figure so xD
In all honestly it looks ok as is, but in my opinion it would look smoother with a color just along the edge of the shadows anti-alising it to make it smoother

and don't worry if you disagree wit something! XD dithering is a style choice and if you don't want to work in it thats fine xD
