Dolling Style : Toolers only im afriad on this one.

Duration lesson: 24th April Till 6th May. (May possibly extend during my holiday, depending on Wifi coverage.

Applications taken via PM. Please include dolling examples, email adress and program details used and experience.

Experience required: basic fold knowledge.

Base size: Medium/large.

Online time 1-2 hours daily minimum.

Special Requirement: Ability to resist Smudging a little
Program allowing a brush tool and layers. (Photoshop, PSP, etc)

So i'm gonna start the ball rolling with a lil' "rolling tutorial" covering dresses, this toolers favourite thing to draw. So if you would like to learn how to draw folds like:
Image (Bunnystick base)

This technique will also give some good practice on dolling on larger bases as well. Also will be covering matirial texture, and (possibly) the use of brushes.

Anyone who is interested feel free to drop me a pm and i'll get this going :)

So off we go.

Now for the first attempt i would like it if we could all use the same base, it makes the final show easier :)

the base i'd like to be used is http://mariiii.de/joomla/bases/191-basesbelle

The technique im going to show you does work better with a larger base, and this one was chosen as it a little bit hippy which lends a gorgeous curve to start the folds from.

Im gonna start the tut at the very start (Go Figure huh XD) You want a document thats alot larger than the doll give doodle space either side to play with colour combi's.

I generally start with three layers, one for the base, one to do the blocking out for the dress, and a third for a sketchy lineart for where the fold will go.

What We Are Dolling
What the first thing we are going to doll is a figure skimming slinky evening gown. Which is going hug the figure, then pool around the feet.

Task

On any of the base poses from the above base we need to block out how the gown will flow. The trick to getting this kind of dress to look right is to make sure that the folds at the bottom aren't uniform. When the folds look too neat then the matirial looks stiff.
The best way to get the bottom hem looking soft, is draw a squiggly line under the base that diesnt follow the regiment of up down up down, cause that looks bad unless the matirial is very heavy and stiff. See the doll i did a while back (Silindor Base )

Image

The top looks shocking because its so boring, I admit it XD

And since we want your dolls to rock, you want the hemline to look similar to the one in the example below.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b67/PhoeC/step2.png

Colour wise, you want a generic kind of boring colour, in between two shades you like. I went for a blue-grey tone which is kinda dull, but you will be suprised on how the colours used in your shading brings the matirial to life. For me it can go into a darker blue, but can also go to a lighter aqua :)

When you have got your blocking done, please post a wip on the topic, so we all know where we are up to.

Well since it's been quiet on here all i can do is get going ont he next stage :P

So.

Step Two

The next stage os to see how you want the dress to flow, Generally, is you want a softer look to the matirla, you want lots and lots of folds that aren't uniform, If you want a stiffe look, the you want fewer folds that are quite straight and angular.

On a new layer, do a rough sketch for the folds, in a bright colour. It doesn't have to be neat :P mine never are.

You want it to look something like this
Image

Once this has been done, post a wip, and we'll see if the folds make sense :)

lol i pixel by the mouse normally too, but a tablet will help you alot with it being a tooled doll, as it gives you a flexibility when drawing that is harder to get with a mouse :)

Makes sense. :)

I'm not sure what time zone you are, but I'm AZ Mountain. I'm out of work at around 4 - 4:30 ish and I get home about 15 or so minutes after that, Daniel doesn't raid until 6, I think, so I should be on around that time. :)

(I think I remember him saying he had a raid today. lol.)

Looking good ladies :) I do apologise for the Berlin Wall of text :P but its needed at this point.

Marly 8)

Great start, the only fold that bothers me is the curved one in the middle, To make such a drap there the skirt itself would be longer on one side than the other.

With the midriif you just need to decide if it's going to be Uber tight or just figure hugging. With something that isn't stupidly tight, you can almost ignore the crotch and have the folds going from the thigh area, asthe thighs are more prominant you can draw the focus away from there.

If its really skin titgh a bit of shadowing under the belly, and then some Tigh looknig folds over the thighs bring the definaition to the doll without highlighting the wrong area

What i've done is a quick line for you, so you still have the two folds to give the interest but without the fold that didnt fit on the doll.

Image

Raven :) brilliant start on her.

Theres two things i would say throwing your doll off. The first one is really simple :) You got a little bit circular on the base of the dress. What this does is throws the perspective off by making the skirt loop behind her too far.

This is a really exagerated example but this is what i mean.
Image

Its very simple to fix, and by fixing it now, you save a ton of work later, it also really works with this kind of dress. All you need to think is a bowtie :P
Image
Wide at hips, narrow at knee and then wide at skirt. You can still have the curve on the skirt, but by making it less pronouced it works better.

On the lineart. The best place to start folds is the chest area, and where the body bends. So boobs, waist then kness.

So with a strapples top, you'll have tight on the boobs, loosish on the waisht and cause we go skinnier on the knees to get a cute fishtail, creased there.
LIke so
Image

and then just play around on the skirt. I went to about here on it
Image

One thing i have found is if you try and make it curve back under at this point the skirt tends to bubble out on the base, rather than its just draping on the floor. However you can make it look like its gathering in folds in front of the dress it'll be fine for now, it can and will be altered.

So after reading my wall of text, just nip back onto your lining, give it a tweak, and post your next wip. (Tweaking that takes more than 1/2 will not be allowed at this stage on the lines ((MHWAHAHAHAHA bracket overload) - however Raven can take longer on the hemline :P) if you over think the folds it wont look good )

Raven Hunnie between your first and second i call that a 100% improvement WTG!

Amy :) I just didnt want to go too far and mean you miss out on anything.

I love your lineart, it flows really well. the only thing i will mention, is that you have two sections on her hips with completely straight lines for quite large blocks, she will look alot better if you curve them :) Also make sure the dress is all one colour without a border :P When tooling you really don't need one, its more of a pixellers trick :)

Marly

I hope the test went well.
