Brill, the curve give her a much more natural shape :) now thats done, you want to get step two started XD Once youve got the basic lines for the fold, well tweak that (if needed) then well get on with shading!

you know what it ISNT a fail. lemme redline then ill edit this to show ya :)

Main thing ill say, is redline with the pencil tool, since this kind of dress flows really nicely, the pixel line can look a bit harsh when drawing and throw you off (I have to swap to pencil lines myself cause of this problem)

The top and waist are pretty much perfect, the strain on the matirial is right.

Its your hem line i think that is causing the issue, NOt how its drawn, cause i love the flow to it, more to the case that the line has change up or down and a fold has began straight away from that point and just gone up. Form your hemline you've got 8 straight folds start from the points show below.

Image

This can make the doll look a little repetitive, what you can do is have one main fold almost to draw the eye in, perhaps like below following the curve of the leg down to the bottom of the base. Like so.

Image

This will give you a great starting point to work from, and will also give the dress a funky fishtail train effect XD

Then its just a case of dividing the random space around this. So stick in a bit of a hemline bunch, a wide fold, a narrow one. And you've got the folds in, and as all the folds are different they look alot better and less plastic :)

Image

SO have a play and lets see what you come up with :)

and can i say 333 page views!! LOL

Looking good girles :)

Next thing were gonna start is Mutt Shading XD

ITs a quick layer just blocking out firstly shadows then highlight after. You want it on a seperate lay for two main reasons. YOu dont have to bother about shading in the lines, cause ill show the fastest way to clean up. Also when the dress is done, you can tweak the shading by changing the opacity of the layers.

The way i generally go on colours is:

MIdtone for base

Next shadow down from midtone (Shade 2)
Next highlight up from midtone (Shade 3)

Next Shadow down from Shade 2
Next Higlight up from Shade 3

This means you dont make the dress look too dark or too shiny.

One thing i will say is palettes made for pixel shaders do not go well on tooled doll, as most of the time the variance in tones dont quite work, mainly as alot of premade palettes just go light to dark, without being any fun really XD

Just looking at the pallete you have Amy, if you shaded a tooled doll with it as it is, it will look quite washed out and flat, because there isnt any deeper tones in it.

Image

BY adding a darker purple tone, it lifts the palette and gives you a real nice dark tone to use for shadowing.

Step 3 and 4 - (Can put together but i would like two wips, one for each shading step)

What i would like you to do, is make two new layers on the dress and following your lines, start shading.

Two main rules to follow.

Do not be bothered about staying in the lanes of the gown.

Don't make huge jumps in the colours you choose.

First layer will be your first shadows, so it'll look something like this (I neatened it before WIP'ing but yours doesnt need this yet)

Image

And the second will be a highlight, bringing the wip to this stage.

Image

Once done, post your two WIP's in here XD

Raven, i think your issue on step three is that you went too pale on the highlight step, If you look at Marly's one, she made a very small step when she went into step 4, and because it is alot more of a gradual step, it looks alot nicer.

What i've done is found you a reference picture, to give you a but of a base to work the side folds around her wasit/hips from:

http://www.chinatowner.com/images/produ ... largeF.jpg

Try comparing that with what you've drawn and see if by using that as a guide, see how much you can improve the folds there :)

Marly, i'd probably naoor wdown ther dress in the red area, she looks like shes gotta extra hip there XD

So Redo and RE-WIp and once we've done that we get to go nuts on colours XD

Raven that looks 100% better again, i love how much you're improving XD

With lighlingst, they best thing to so is decide a lightsource, and shade to favor that :) THe only thing i would do, is increase the amount on the gown thats shaded now, once thats done your set for the next stages :)

I've just quickly redlined a bigger shaded area, and amped up your highlinght,. to give you the nudge in the right direction for them :)

Image

YOull get bunes cookies of your shade the doll with the shadows and highlights into the tones given on the doll, it'd look so pretty XD

OK next stage issss.

Exactly the same as the one you've just done, cept for one thing.

Take your shades a little bit saker/little bit lighter. And shade your shading XD Always start a new leyer for each tone. XD

Now once your done that, repeat it again, until you get the dress looking as shiney as you want.

As i like shiney i took mine to

Image

Now i'm gonna be Netless for about a week, so you are gonna be on your own on this one. What i would probably suggest is use this topic to just get crit between yourselves.

Once im back, ill show you how the different layers allow you to tweak the tones, and alse how to recolour easily.

Sneak peak on that: 2 mins work and you get..

You dont fail hun, there are only a couple of tweaks.

Main thing i would say is that you've stepped away from your original lines in the centre, and just added two folds that done sit right. Thats all, two lines XD doesn't count as a fail at all. I've circled em for you

Image

NOw if we take them out, and instead add a fold showing the dress is pulled tight over her hips. (had to do it over your lines  )

Image
It fills the space around her hips without adding the look of more matirial.

I think im gonna say the opther thing is colour choice. Lets Ditch the pallete completely. USe the colour select tool to change shades, by thats i mean this:

Image

The best wayto think of the colours (that i find)

Down and right get rich colours
Down and left get dull.
Up and right get bright colours
Up and left get pastel.

The best choice for your doll will always be up to you. What i generally have is rich shadows (down, right) and pastel highlights (up left)

BUT if you just do this in one colour, it will look flat.

Image

HOwever there is a really neat trick to always jazz them up.

As well as changing the lightness/darkness, switch up the hues as well.

The programs even help you out on this. THe colour bar with all the colours on- play with it

By taking the shadows down into fuschia and the pink into red, we get a nifty little chane which will liven up your dress nicely.

Image

Its a very subltle change on this example, but you can do huge jumps as well (Kyara's Hair :P)

So take a step back, and have a play. And ill see you guys in a week :(
