Facial Cloning

Postby Sheesha » Thu Aug 26, 2010 2:13 pm

Hello, friends!
The goal of this workshop is to give you guys an idea of how to accurately pixel the faces/heads of existing people, especially when you do not have references of them in your desired pose.

I'll accept three to five students , depending how many people are interested.

1. Raven-Hollow
2. Andrea
3. A tentative Blu
4. xCassx
5. contradiction

Tentatively sign me up? >.>

Ok, so I know I'm not active enough in my Training Room thread, but it's because I'm lacking inspiration for most things - one thing I need is this - is it ok if I join? I tend to drop projects and this should be more of an incentive.

Thankoo :)

All right, this is five people, so I think we can start.
And, of course, the best place to start is to choose the person you'll be drawing.

I will be dolling Canadian Liberal Michael Ignatieff, because his face amuses me.

I'll go for David Tennant, I think, because there's pictures of him everywhere and because he's hot :P

Also, because it means an easier doll.

Witness the fitness:

I'm going to go with Jared Padalecki because I am obsessed with Supernatural and this will help the time pass before the new season starts.

I've never dolled a boy, so I don't know if I should start at a weak point...
or doll a girl and start with something I know a little bit about...

I think I'll post two possibilities as well, considering I don't know what I'll end up flourishing in (if any).

Image
Jonathon Young (hehe).

Image
Or Gabrielle Anwar, because she's pretty.

Those of you wish multiple options could try using both people for the first few steps, and then choosing one at a later section?

And I think we ought to begin! Probably by choosing a base.
I'm, going to use one of my own bases, so I don't have to feel bad for chopping up someone else's work.
You typically want to work with something medium-large, so you have room for drawing the face.

And the first thing we're going to do is cut its head off.

Now, I don't really need to see that you've beheaded a base, so I'll move right into the next step: giving the base a new head.
I've decided to draw Mister Ignatieff looking face-forward.
I use the circle and line tools in Paint.

Now, we redraw the face, with your subject's face shape and proportions in mind. I typically eyeball this, but you can line it up too...

Image

The only shape you're paying attention to right now is head shape. All the features on that head are only being positioned.

Well, looks like I've put the top of DT's head where his hairline should be >.<

Aside from that, is it ok?

Image
Base

Ah... yes. The vertical green line was the middle of his bonce, until I moved it. And forgot to move the line. Douche.

eww, too much of a jawline - fine, editing now.

Lalala,

contradiction:
Image

Good to see that you fixed the eyes in your edit; they were a bit too close together before.
I've moved the top of his head up, as Mister Tennant's hair isn't so terribly thick that hair cropped that short would rise much above the head. I also just moved the ears up.
His head is looking like it might be a bit bulky on the base. You could try making it a pixel thinner on each side, or just see how you like the size; the bobblehead look is quite popular, and most dollers seem to prefer it.

Andrea:
Image
Mostly, all I did was redraw his jawline (which might still be too small). His head was slightly too smooth and 'eggy', and Jared's head is rather masculine (and the jawline is an important part! When drawing original characters, you can use a strong jaw to denote 'manlier' characters!) .
Oh, and his eyes were a bit too far apart. I moved each one in by one pixel.

I decided to go with just Jonathon Young!

(And is it alright if I do a right-ish facing face? XD)

I noticed the head was a bit short - the base isn't final yet, I do want a slightly larger one because I hate making smaller dolls.

Thanks :)

Part of the problem here is that his face isn't straight in your reference. Because his head is pointed down slightly, lining it up will be a problem. That angle kind of destroys his chin and whatnot.
So, I need to know whether your plan is to draw his face on that angle, or not. If you decide not to use that angle, you'll have to eyeball it or choose a different photo.
