@ Spitfire: That's definitely an interesting pose! I like it!

Ok, so we’ve all got our reference pics. Now we’ve got to resize it.

I like to shrink it to roughly Moe’s size. If you want yours smaller or bigger, go for it.

Just copy a base of the size you want, and paste it as a new image/layer. Line it up so you can see how much of a difference there is between the two.

Mine got squished down to 30%, but it will be different for everyone.

Then you trace the outline. Fingers can be a pain, because they tend to look more like claws. We’ll work with that once we start shading.

* I like to color in the background around the model, so I can still see the body. Then I go in and flood-fill it to check that the edges are smooth and there isn’t anything weird going on. From there I drop the opacity to 25% - 50% and trace the outline. Do whatever you’re more comfortable with.

If there are parts you can’t see very well, try to study the full-size image and guestimate where the outline should be. Try to jot in the breasts, belly-button, elbows, knees, and ankles if you can. It will make things easier when we shade.

I stopped my outline at the neck, because she’s going to get a new face later. You don’t have to do that. Make sure you trace the eyes, eyebrows, nose and lips if you’re doing the face now. Try to get the shape of the head without hair, too.

Here's what my workspace looks like...
Image

Her hands and shoulders look weird, so I improvised to make it look better.

Image

We’ll leave it at that for now. It’s a simple step, but it’s probably the most important, so we want to make sure we’re happy with it.

Never thought that tracing an image would be as hard as it was for me.

Next time, I'll choose a naked stock model, lol.

I couldn't trace the whole wand thing, so I just put a metal thingy. I might make I few alternate hands with things to hold, like a microphone and a knife. And I put some possible head shapes for her.

Alright, so I didn't resize the image a lot, since I'd like to make a big base ^^ I love pretty big bases :D

Here is how far I have gotten.
I hope it's censored enough? xD
Image

My problem are the hands as you can see :/ Just fixed the boobs a little and am pretty happy with the rest (maybe change the hips a little though), but the hands look like blobs. I tried with the fingers but it was a horror. Any help or advice maybe?

No palette because I get that while shading and will change it later 100% ^^

Hey all, these outlines all look really good! Great job everyone!

There were some minor things I noticed, so I went and did some redlining. Feel free to take them with a grain of salt. (I only have two done, I'll work on the other two in the morning. Tired Pudi is tired.)

@Allpixeledout
The main thing, I thought, was that the fingers were too... sausagey. I don't know that they're all that better now, because fingers are evil and very difficult to draw. I'm still bothered by the thumb and pointer finger, but maybe I'm just anal. :p I messed with her boobs too - for this stage, we just want the very bottom curve. Her belly-button was a little too low (in the pic, you can see it under her leotard), and I also smoothed out a few lines. I really like the smoothness of this pose - I'm tempted to doll on it already!
Image

@Andrea
Eep, that looks like more redline than I thought. =\ I just went and smoothed things out, like the thighs and ribs, to give it more definition. I also shrank her foot a bit, and gave her a thicker neck. It's definitely a challenge dolling a clothed model, especially such a tricky pose! You did great!

Am now off to sleep, so I can function tomorrow. *passes out*

Thank you for the red lining. I figured there would be a lot of it.

Glad to know I didn't do 'too' bad. :)

@ Yiri and Spitfire

I'm sorry I haven't done the redlines for yours yet! I've been working a ton of overtime, so I'm more than a little tired lately. My next day off is Sunday, so I'll definitely have them done by then, but I'll see if I can't get something done sooner! I'm so sorry!

@Yiri
Very nice! Her face is so pretty - I can't wait to see it shaded! I just went and gave her fingers, and I narrowed her arms a bit so they didn't look too big. That position for her hands is really difficult. I was zooming in and out after every pixrl to figure out which finger was connected to which hand. It's still not perfect, but it's fingers, at least. :p
Image

@Spitfire
Wow, what a difficult pose! You did great! All I did was smooth out some of the lines, and I tapered her arm and pulled out her belly (she looked sickly thin before; once we start shading, we can give her some muscle definition, so she won't look so... bulky.) I really like the toes, but maybe I'm just weird that way. :mrgreen:
Image

@VoodooCocaine I understand if life is a little hectic - take your time and post whenever you're able! I'll try my best to get you caught up if need be! (Life is crazy over here, so I really only have one day available for computer time anymore.) Looking forward to seeing your outline!

D'oh! Sorry, it's been a long week!

It's no problem at all! Hands are a real challenge for me too, but once we start shading, we'll be able to focus on them a little more!

Double post. Because I can. 8)

Next step! Wooo! Let's start shading!

I’m going to use my 12 color palette from the base in my first post. The more colors you use, the more fluid and, hopefully, realistic the base will look. On the downside, this can make editing the base difficult for other dollers. Most people use a five or six color palette for bases.

I’m going to encourage you to use my palette, because that’s how I’m going to be teaching, but you don't have to if you aren't comfortable with that many colors! I can simplify things if you only want to use 6 colors instead.

Now, I have three colors with little handles on them. Those are what we start with. I’m going to refer to each color as 1 – 12. 1 being the darkest, 12 is the lightest. (My outline is in 3, and she's flood-filled with 7.)

Make a new layer, if you can. Lower the opacity of the filled outline. Determine where the light source is and draw a sun or something to keep you on track. Use 3 and sketch in where all of the shadows are.

Image

Use 11 and do the same for highlights. The cleaner this is now, the less work you’ll have to do later.

Image

Then I made a new layer and sort of guessed where the rest of the shading should go, since I couldn't see those areas in the picture.

Image

And this is what it looks like without the pic.

Image

I'll give you guys a few days to work on this.

I dunno, I played a guessing game the whole time Dx It looks terrible. I like the dark shadows but the highlights are... UGH.... Maybe a more simple shading would be better for that big base? With dithering? Any help appreciated :( I know it sucks Dx
I have only ever shaded a base with the light coming from the front.

Hey guys, I'm still here! Been working 55 hours weeks, and it's not going to slow down until January. I have Wednesday off, so I'll help with the shading part then! Thanks for the patience!
