I have a question: how do I create a link to an e-mail (so that when people click it, the "new message" window from outlook opens automatically with my e-mail on the recipient field)?

Umm I'm not really a trainee or anything but my webpage has this feature:] i didn't really know how to see the code so I just highlighted my email and tried what Daenerys adviced before

Daenerys wrote:If you are curious what I did in the code so far: rightclick on the page and choose 'view page source'. You will see the code in a window. If you want to see the page inside the frame, rightclick on the area in the frame in the middle of the page.

and well this code came up

Code: Select all
<a target="_blank" href="mailto:maudeemaniac@gmail.com" class="fw_link_email fw_link_newWindow">maudeemaniac@gmail.com</a>

maybe this might help :]

Code: Select all
<a href="mailto:youradress@mail.com">Contact me here</a>

Should do as well.

So the basic code MauDee gave is good, but the 'class' bit is relevant only to the css as used on that page.

You can also use:

Code: Select all
<a href="mailto:youradress@mail.com?subject=Fill in your subject">Mail me here</a>

This is handy if you want to include a subject in the mail. For instance, with the name of your contest.

Beware that there are bots crawling the internet and your site, which may lead to your email address being harvested for spamlists. If you have a good spamfilter, this will stop most of the spam and possible virus mails.

But if you want to go an extra step, you can obscure your email adress by putting a word in that people then have to delete before they send the mail.

Or use a webform or guestbook.

Forms for a website are a bit more advanced than I wanted to include, but here are some free online formbuilders.

http://www.phpform.org/
http://www.emailmeform.com/
http://formsmarts.com/

Do read and check the sites, I have just googled for them and do not use them myself.

Everything going okay, so far?

Ok! Thanks.

Today I tried to organize one of my doll category pages and I pretty much messed everything up because I don't understand the syntax for making tables. :P

I was trying to do something like this:

Image

There will be several tables like those.
Also, is there a way to make the cells "adapt" themselves to the content instead of fixing a size?

Ahh, tables :)

Tables, or Umrae

A basic table is structured like so:
Code: Select all
<table>
<tr>
<td> CONTENT cell 1  top row </td>
<td> CONTENT cell 2 top row </td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td> CONTENT cell 1 bottom row</td>
<td> CONTENT cell 2 bottom row </td>
</tr>
</table>

And really, with that structure in mind you can do anything.

table obviously opens the table tag. tr stands for Table Row. For each row you need, you need to use this tag to open in.

A Table Row can contain as many cells as you like. Table cells contain the actual data, hence: td (Table Data).

When you are done adding td's, you end the tr. You can repeat the tr with the content cells td as many times as you like, and when you have all the rows you need, end the table.

(To try it out, just copy paste into an HTML page in notepad)

In the cat_fanart.html file, the table looks like this:

Code: Select all
<!-- This table has a class that is set in the frame css. To change properties in one go for all tables with this class, edit the frame css-->
<table class="v3tabledoll">

<tr>
<!-- Copy from here to below to repeat-->
<!-- In these TD cells you can put your dolls -->
<td width=200>
<p><img src="img/dolltemplate.png" /></p>
</td>

<td width=200>
<p><img src="img/dolltemplate.png" /></p>
</td>

<td width=200>
<p><img src="img/dolltemplate.png" /></p>
</td>

<td width=200>
<p><img src="img/dolltemplate.png" /></p>
</td>
</tr>

<tr>
<!-- In these TD cells you can put the base credits -->
<!-- This TD cell is being set in the frame css. To change the properties in one go for all TD cells that have this class, edit the frame css -->
<td class="doll1" width=200>
<p><a href="http://" target"="_blank">Base credit here</a></p>
</td>

<td class="doll2" width=200>
<p><a href="http://" target"="_blank">Base credit here</a></p>
</td>

<td class="doll1" width=200>
<p><a href="http://" target"="_blank">Base credit here</a></p>
</td>

<td class="doll2" width=200>
<p><a href="http://" target"="_blank">Base credit here</a></p>
</td>
</tr>

<!-- To repeat the image and credits rows simply copy the above and paste before the end of the table -->

</table>

As you can see, there are two rows (two tags with a start and end td) and each row has 4 cells with dolls or credit. You can copy and paste the rows as many times as you like, before ending the table.

Merging cells and/or rows

It is possible to 'merge' cells next to each other, so they overlap the columns. To accomplish your drawing, you need to do this. You use the attribute 'colspan=' in the td-tag:

Code: Select all
<html>
<head>
<title>Table</title>

</head>

<body>

<table>
<tr>
<td colspan=3> <h2>Title</h2></td>
</tr>

<tr>
<td> Name Doll 1</td>
<td> Name Doll 2</td>
<td> Name Doll 2</td>
</tr>

<tr>
<td> Doll 1</td>
<td> Doll 2</td>
<td> Doll 2</td>
</tr>

<tr>
<td> Credit doll 1</td>
<td> Credit doll 1</td>
<td> Credit doll 1</td>
</tr>

<tr>
<td colspan=3>Some text to fill this whole merged set of cells in one massive row. I should get the lorem ipsum text generator.</td>
</tr>
</table>

</body>

</html>

Feel free to copy paste and play around with this. This table has no set widths or heights, and also does not have a css-class attached to it.

To make more rows or name-doll-credit, just copy and paste the rows underneath each other in ONE table. There is no need to start a new table, if you want to use the same format of rows/cells.

Size of cells
Edit or remove the width, to change the size of the cells. This WILL result in a table that will go wonky, when you add images in the cells that are bigger than the images in a cell underneath it. It will stretch the whole column to fit the biggest sized image.

Code: Select all
td class="doll2" width=200

can become
Code: Select all
td class="doll2" width=300

Or just delete the width=200 bit.

css
The table is defined, colours and font size for instance, in the css (frame.css).

Code: Select all
/* This is the table used for showing dolls */
.v3tabledoll {
  font-family: tahoma, arial;
  color: #B4807A;
  font-size: 8pt;
  text-align: center;
}

/* This is the credit link light colour cell */
.doll1 {
  background: #694A2C;
  font-family: tahoma, arial;
  color: #B4807A;
  font-size: 8pt;
  text-align:center;
}

/* This is the credit link dark colour cell */
.doll2 {
  background: #44290E;
  font-family: tahoma, arial;
  color: #B4807A;
  font-size: 8pt;
  text-align:center;
}

You can add the table class to your table. So add: <table class="v3tabledoll">

And add classes to your cells if you need them, in the td-tags: <td class="doll1"> for font size and colour of the text.

Recommend

I really do recommend to use table cells with a fixed width. You can always merge cells with colspan=2 to show wider images.

If you really don't want to use a fixed width, then yes: use separate tables for each row of name-doll-credit. If that works for you, for updating and so on, it should be fine.

Questions? :)

Do you know if I break a link to my email (such as, putting crazybluwriter<b></b>@yahoo.com) if spambots will still catch it?

I'm not even sure if that would do anything to the code; I just know it works on dA. ^^;

Bots are getting smarter and I am no expert on them, per se. But I always understood that if you used a break like you did (ie daenerysREMOVETHIS@fivendae.com) it should confuzzle the bots.

Another option is to use an image. Though some bots are able to 'read' images too, it seems. Then again, it is all down to convenience: if you email is up for grabs, sooner or later it will be grabbed. Make it a little bit harder and they are more likely to leave it alone.

Like adding just an extra lock on your bike... Thieves would rather steal the one with no lock or just the one standard lock.

Okay, I THINK I understand now. I'll play around with the codes and upload soon.

But for my site I wanted to showcase the dolls so all you had to do was click on the doll to go directly to the base maker. How would I do that?

Linking using an image

Code: Select all
<a href="http://urlof.basemaker.com" target="_blank"><img src="dolls/yourawesomedoll.gif" border="0" /></a>

This is called 'embedding'. You embed the image in between the link tag.

Remember: target=_blank opens the link in a new tab or window. the border="0" makes sure there is no border around your image.
(Or rather: a border of 0 pixels :P)

If you want to use a hover-over text, you can use this code:
Code: Select all
<a href="http://urlof.basemaker.com" target="_blank"><img src="dolls/yourawesomedoll.gif" border="0" alt="This doll is awesome, and the base was made by..." /></a>

The text in the alt-tag should show up in most browsers when you hover over the image.

The alt-tag can be as short or as long as you like, but don't make it too long. It is designed to 'translate' the image for people who are not displaying images in their browser. Or the alt-tag can be used for blind people, who use text-to-braille/speech software to 'view' or listen to web pages. I think.

Anyway, long story, but you can pick what is handy for you.

Okay, thank you! So, it's kind of like when you link dolls on here when you use the [url= ] tag, then the [img= ] tag, right?

I also got all the pages uploaded and what not. Except for the sub categories of my dolls and bases. Would I just upload those like the other pages, or do I have to do something different?

Yep, BBcode, as used on Glam!, is actually kind of like html. The same with <b> and the [.b] and so on. So if you know how to use that, you're already on the way to mastering html.

You mean the pages or the dolls?

You can upload all files. If you want to change something, you can either make the changed on the files on your computer, or edit the files on webs.com.

(Better to edit the files on your computer, because that way you have a back up. Plus, you can preview your site on your own computer, before you share it with the world.)

Your dolls and bases are image files. You can upload them exactly the same as html-files. You may want to make a separate folder for 'dolls' and 'bases', or stick them in one 'dolls' folder.

However, and you should consider this, you can easier upload lots of dolls to Photobucket, if you have an account. Maybe you already have dolls on there. In that case, you can just use Photobucket as your external dolls-folder, as it were.

You can then use the 'direct link' option to get your link to show the doll:

Code: Select all
<a href="http://manor.fiveanddae.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g10/daeclubs/Manor/dolls/gaga_daeoct10.png" border="0" alt="My mother doesnt know who Lady Gaga is" /></a>

Bases would be difficult to keep on Photobucket though, because they're so scared of nudity in pixels :roll:

No, I meant the pages. Cause in the index file, it only lists the main pages, so if I were to upload the other pages, would they show up? Like how in the index it says dolls01.html, or whatever. Would the sub categories need to be listed in there as well?

Like, how does it work?

Sorry for asking so many questions. D:

Don't apologize, Twigg! You're asking the right questions!

How linking within the website works

Yes, on the index.html you see links to the pages that are in the same folder as the index.html page. But you can put html pages you want to link to in separate folders, too, if you want.

A link within a website works about the same as a link to another page online. The difference is, that your own pages on your own webspace are in the same 'folder', or 'root' of your domain (or subdomain, in the case of webs.com).

That main folder can have subfolders, as we have with 'dolls' or 'css' or 'img'. To link to files in these folders, you point to the folder first, and then name the file.

Code: Select all
<a href="dolls/harrypotter.html" target="inlineframe">Harry Potter dolls</a>

This code links to a page called harrypotter.html, which is located in the 'dolls' folder in your 'root'.

Code: Select all
<a href="glam/dolls/books/harrypotter.html" target="inlineframe">Harry Potter dolls</a>

This code links to a harry potter page in a folder called books, in a folder called dolls... etc...

The same is true for linking to images on a page. But if you put all the dolls of Harry, Hermione and Ron in a folder called books, in the same folder as where you put your html file, you don't need to specify the folder, because your page already is there.

BUT!

If you want to link from a subfolder to another subfolder, or a folder higher up in the structure, you have to include a sign that tells the browser to look for the files higher up.

Let's see if I can make this clear and easy.

Your Web Files Structure
- ROOT
- index.html
- dolls.html
--DOLLS
-->harrypotter.html
--> harryandron.gif
--> hermione.gif
--> snape.gif
---->>BOOKS
---->>bookocs.html
---->>marysue.gif

How do you link back and forth?

On your index.html page there is a link to dolls.html:
a href="dolls.html"

And a link to your latest doll, Hermione:
img src="DOLLS/hermione.gif"

On your harrypotter.html is a link to a doll of Snape:
img src="snape.gif"

and you are linking to a page with your oc's:
a href="BOOKS/bookocs.html"

Now, on your booksocs.html, you want to show the picture of Harry and Ron from the DOLLS folder:
img src="../DOLLS/harryandron.gif"

And link back to the dolls.html page from booksocs.html:
a href="../../dolls.html"

The ../ indicates that the requested file or page is one level up, in a folder above.

Does that make sense to you?

In short: the easiest way is to keep all you html pages in the root folder. That way, you only have to link to the currect folder with the image.

But, the most organized way is to put all html files that belong together in a separate folder. But you will have to take care with using the correct links.

Alternately, you CAN link to a page in your website, but using the WHOLE url:

Code: Select all
<a href="http://daenelia.webs.com/dolls/other01.html">

I can try to explain it again, if you are confused or don't understand. I think I can make screenshots and stuff to illustrate better.

I've been thinking, and what I came up with is that I just write out the 'lessons' on the website, at http://daenerys.fiveanddae.com and then just keep this thread open for questions and extra information required.

So you can still ask questions here! I'll also post when the whole lesson plan in online.

... yes, I take this serious. :P

Thanks so much, I will <3

Edit: Everythings working great <3
thanks so much for the templatey design skin what-cha-call-it <3
Now to make it my own <3 *runs about excitably*

Could you help me out with a code that will let me have images as the bg? Like lace :3

The borders are acting up a little. I'm I'd like to have a border going right around the box (which will have the lave images I mentioned just above)

And lastly, I also really enjoy traditional drawing and making graphics (like skins and signatures) would it be okay if I include them as well?

Thankies ^o^

You're using the side nav layout, and you can set the background properties in the css file called 'main.css'

Code: Select all
body
{ background: #C91E52;
  background-image: url(../img/main_bg1.png);
  background-repeat:no-repeat;
  background-position:left top;
  margin-top: 0;
  margin-bottom: 0;
  margin-left: 0;
  margin-right: 0;
  padding-left: 0;
  padding-right: 0;
  font-family: tahoma, arial;
  color: #6D0625;
  font-size: 8pt;
  text-align: center;

Where it says background-image, is where you define what images shows up as a image on the background. That means that all your div layers will be shown on top of it.

'background-repeat' will define if the background is or is not repeated. You use repeat when you use a tile, like a lace tile. Just make sure the tile is seamless, so that the whole background flows together nicely, like the starry background on Glam :)

Which box? The navigation div or the div with the iframe?

You can set the properties for border around div's in the css 'main.css'.
Code: Select all
/* The middle div contains the iframe and navigation layers. */
#middle {
  width: 813px;
  height: 406px;
  margin: 0 auto;
  position: relative;
  padding-top:3px;
  padding-bottom:2px;
  padding-right:2px;
  padding-left:2px;
  background-image: url(../img/middle_bg1.png);
  background-repeat:no-repeat;
  background-position:left top;

}

/* This is the navigation div layer. This contains the listed links to other pages. */
#navleft {
  text-align: left;
  width: 209px;
  height: 400px;
  float: left;
  position: relative;
  background-image: url();

}

The code to add a border is border-width, border-style etc.

Code: Select all
#navleft {
  text-align: left;
  width: 205px;
  height: 396px;
  float: left;
  position: relative;
  background-image: url();
  border-width:2px;
  border-style:solid;
  border-color:#000000;
}

Just subtract the border from the height and width, to make it as compatible as possible with IE as well as FF. You can do the same to any div layer in the css's.

And lastly, I also really enjoy traditional drawing and making graphics (like skins and signatures) would it be okay if I include them as well?

Thankies ^o^

I don't think the layout is that suited for bigger drawings and scans. But if you can figure out how to do that, go right ahead. I did make the layouts specifically for dolls and pixels, which are small graphics. You may have to think about using thumbnails that link out to the bigger images.

Hope that helps you along a bit more. If something isn't clear, just ask! I'd be happy to help more!
