So I donated blood today with my friend. It was funny: blood spurt up my arm and onto my shirt, I have like, the SLOWEST flow ever (took me an hour to fill the bag), and I just slept for 4 hours...
It's free and easy and is quite painless but I know there are some people out there fully opposed to donating. "I wouldn't want someone else's blood even if I needed it, so they're not getting mine," is a common statement I hear. I know that blood drives are everywhere with a quota and certain blood types are more sought after than others, but do YOU donate? Would you if you haven't? Would you donate anything else (organs, marrow, tissue, eggs, sperm, etc.)? Would you want donated blood if you absolutely needed it--I'm not talking from your immediate family and friends either--from a stranger?

I keep trying, but keep getting rejected. Last time because I had a highish temperature. I also wanted to be an organ donor, but when I went to get my ID my mother wasn't there and you need parental permission under 18. |

I have not donated blood. I have a thing with needles and I just can't bring myself to do it.
I am a registered organ donor so I will be harvested when I die.
I think if I had a baby I would donate the umbilical cord (stem cells) to research. And if I had an abundance of milk then I would donate that.
Of course I would want donated blood if I needed it. I see no problem with other people's blood (so long as they have passed screening of course) and I certainly wouldn't want to die.
I wonder, what options are there for pets to be organ donors? When our vet was removing a massive tumour from our dog earlier in the year, he brought in his own dog in case ours needed blood. I think that is a beautiful thing.
I love my dogs to bits and if at death they can save the life of another pet that is loved then I would want that. Or donate the body to a vet school to help train future vets.

I'm a blood donor and I'm an organ donor as well. Of course I want to give what I can to help another and I don't see the reason why I should keep organs if I'm dead and gone.
@Helyn: I have a "retired" donor cat that our vet decided was old enough to retire and started searching for a home. He's the sweetest thing. Our vet has donor animals of all kinds. We've also signed our horses up for blood donors since evidently there aren't many of those around. oO

I'm anemic...I gave blood once (my count was JUST enough) and I ended up blacking out/passing out. Recently, I had to get a blood test...I almost fainted with that one too, especially since they couldn't find my vein for a while
I wish I could, because people need it, but it's just not healthy for me.

well the warm/cold thing is probably a 'load of hokum'. You're body temperature is constant regardless of the weather so that won't really help.
I'm a little taken aback by the bit about not wanting donated blood EVEN if you need it... just curious but isn't there some sort of override of permissions when it comes to that? Like, if you're bleeding through a major artery and will die without transfusion, can't your doctors force it into you? Although, I've heard of instances where it's against someone's religion and the hospital got sued :S
I'm on the fence about organ donation. I'll gladly do it if they're still viable at my time of death. I can't use it anyways (duh). But while I'm still using it?I'm a little more hesitant. Then again, you only need one kidney. And your liver can regrow. I'm a supporter of stem cell research so definitely, if I were to have a baby, I'd donate all the stem cells I can. (and keep some, you know. for the baby's future. )
Hmm... I've never heard of egg donation, though it would make sense that there is such a thing, i mean, if people can put eggs(well, fertilized) into a surrogate, the opposite makes sense too. Maybe when I have enough kids, I'd look into that.

my mom's a vet and they do have blood donors. they will usually ask the owner if the pet has a specific type of blood. (like O for humans) because that's really good for animals. In dogs i'm not sure what it is, in cats i think it's AB. i've had a dog who was a blood donor, and almost a cat. as for organ donors, i think they do that less because it's so expensive that people don't generally do it for pets. it's not the viable of an option. i've no clue though.
i wanted to donate blood this year, but around the time of the blood battle i got sick, dammit.

I don't donate blood, because I'm usually below the minimum weight limit for it. I'm not sure whether I like the fact that the choice has been taken away from me - I worry that if I could donate blood, I would be scared/lazy and wouldn't do it, but I'll never know because I don't have the choice. But I think it's a great thing to do. Same goes for bone marrow donations and things like that.
I'm a registered organ donor, though. I'm pretty proud of that.

Yeah, I am a registered organ donor. If I unexpectedly kick the bucket I could save five lives in the process, and that's pretty cool to me. Though if I can, I'd like to stick around a little longer, lol.
I have donated blood but only a couple of times. Mainly because I was such a vigorous plasma donor. I got paid 20 to 30 bucks to have them take the plasma out of my blood. It took a couple of hours and I could go twice a week. I had to get a little card that showed I had lots of sticks in my arm because I was a donor not a drug addict.
If I had a loved one that needed a kidney, bone marrow, etc, I would totally do it. And actually I hear you can get paid a lot of money for eggs and bone marrow. The screening process takes forever though.
Av by me. Lulu from FFX. Baseless.

I've only once had to have blood taken from me .. and it was just too scary, for me. I actually think that donating blood would be good for me, healthwise, But it's the needle thing.
I have had a donor codicil (official document to note I am a donor) for a long time, since I was 16, I think. And when they started registering donors in a big database, I immediately registered there as well. So when I am dead, someone is hopefully going to make merry with my organs!
I am not sure I would donate to a stranger. I'd probably donate to friends and family if the chances were good. But... I am not sure I'd want a donor organ myself, depending on the circumstances.
I am however going to make an amendment to my donor codicil. Up until now there would have been no use for my womb, but I have read that they are maling great leaps in implanting a donor womb in a woman. And that is where I draw the line. By now my eggs are too old anyway, and my womb is probably not the first choice seeing as how old it is, but just in case... I will absolutely refuse to donate my womb or eggs.
I chose consciously not to have kids. It's to do with plenty of people around anyway. And I'll be damned if that choice would be undone by having my womb implanted and used by another. Sorry. There are plenty of cute kids out there. No need for one or two more from this organ.
Other than that, in case of life saving: be my guest, take it all. Just be nice and wait until I am dead, mkay?

I wouldn't mind donating blood for all the blood-poor people, but unfortunately I am unable to donate for two reasons. One is because of the type of medication I take (lol anti-depressants) and two is because I am anemic already. Iron deficiency is an awesome thing.
I'm not sure how I would feel about being an organ donor though. I'm not sure if any of my organs could be used for someone else (due to the statements above) for one and even though at this point in time I'll be dead anyway, it just seems sort of weird?
I wish there were more people out there who would donate since there are several who need it for various reasons.

I've donated blood a couple of times already. It's a nice feeling to help others , and you can never say, that you maybe have an accident, and need blood from others, too. The only thing which avoids me a bit from doing it regulary, is the needle lol. It's not my best friend >.>
I recently also had a card for organ donation (+still have it somewhere in the house. I just need to search it). I mean, if you're dead, you can't get any 'more dead'. And if anything happens with you, and your parents/husband would have to decide what to do (when they're already sad enough) ...I just don't want to let my parents do such a 'hard' desicion.
I think the main reason for not having such a card (or being registered) is not so much the fear of the donation itsself, but thinking about your own dead.

me i cant donate blood, I'm gay and they wont take it. even in school when they did blood drives they told me not to show up.
i would be an organ donor, but i have a weird thing about it. i know it would be saving lives, but the whole thought of someone cutting me open and taking stuff outta me REALLY bothers me. i know ill be dead, but still.

^Wasn't the whole anti-gay thing due to the stupid days when they thought that aids was a gay disease? That is so stupid and outdated. Talk about discrimination...
I'd never want to donate eggs. I don't want to contribute to overpopulation. And I suspect that I might possibly be a carrier for bipolar. I've seen what bipolar done to my family and I'd rather not pass that on. Unfortunately, there aren't any genetic markers for developed for the disorder so it's only ignorant speculation on my part...

I've never donated blood before, but I've donated both of my childrens umbillical cords, since stem cells are so badly needed.
I'm a fan of giving blood, since my elderly mother is very anemic, and needs blood transfusions atleast once every three months. She has a disorder where he bone marrow does not create red blood cells as rapidly as they should.
If I were in dire need of blood I'd hope it would be there, for both me and my children, since some places do not have that luxury.
I don't think I would donate organs, since I'm native americans and have supersitions about the body and the afterworld.
I've donated milk, since a few of my friends have had problems with milk production. I am blessed to create milk like a COW....A COW I tell ya lmao....

I am an organ donor, not that my liver, kidneys or lungs will be any good by the time I hop it.
I can't donate blood due to being anaemic and having Gilbert's Syndrome. Not enough red blood cells and too much bilirubin makes for useless blood for transfusions I'm afraid.

I want to donate blood. But I've never gotten around to doing it. Mostly because I used to get squeamish about having someone poke me in the veins ( I've gotten less afraid of it since -I- got to poke other people in the veins myself. ;D Gotta love my day job.) Yes, I do have coward-ish tendencies.
Right now, I can't because I lost quite a bit of weight over three very stressful months and now I am below the required minimum weight for blood donation. Working on going back to my normal weight, though. (No, I'm not insanely underweight. I'm just insanely short, thank you for reminding me.)
I really, really, really DO encourage people to give blood, though, as only a person who has seen young children bleeding to death can. Of course, t's easy to say you wouldn't want someone else's blood when you're walking around all happy and healthy. When your life depends on it, it's quite a different story. Apparently, there are a lot of benefits to it, too.

I would, but the only places I can access blood drives...I have no trust in my fellow students enough when it comes to life. Mine or anyone elses.
Though in hospital setting, I would give a bit. (Plus, I don't even know my blood type. Never been told and never really had a reason to care. So I'm useless =| for all I know because of that, I would of spread about diseases and not know it.)

I've only donated once so far and that's because I just became the legal age last year to and the school was hosting a blood donation but I plan on donating more.
I had to get pricked in the finger twice because of low iron levels and then I fainted after everything was over and done with. Turns out I'm like, AB Negative which is the most rare blood type? I can't remember if it's the universal recipient or not.
I'm also an organ donor. Honestly, I think everyone should donate organs but that's just me. I won't be using them after I'm dead and I could save lives with it.
