This will be a workshop on how to make naturally curly hair (pixel shaded). It will cover:

  • Using a reference to learn the shapes of the hair.
  • Shading based on a reference image.
  • Two-toned hair (optional step).

Since this is a doll concentrating on the hair, we will be using a portrait base; you may pick your own. Size-wise, think of the Glam exclusive base by Hollay or the Katsu base by ILCK.

I will be accepting three trainees. Post in the thread if you're interested Smile

1. Ashlyn
2. Cathe
3. Lithuria

For those of you who get in, I'll post the first step right now:
I want you to grab a resource image of someone with curly hair. Please make it a stock image, since we will be drawing on it. Some images I've compiled, you can pick one of these if you'd like:

Picture of the lovely Maggot; used in this workshop with permission

In addition, please pick your portrait base.

To do:
-Red carpet collab (40%)
-Vintage collab (100%)
-Maggot's auction win (100%)

Av base is Glam's portrait base

I'd like to be in. I suck at hair. So yeah, might be a good idea =)

Edit: For the reference picture, do you prefer something super curly like this:

or just a little bit curly can work too? Like that:

Ok. So, I'll use Hollay's Cameo as a base.

And I'll be using this picture as a reference. There's a few pictures that were taken in this photoshoot so I might switch between them and use the others as references as well.

That's fine. You will be drawing on one picture, so you'll want to pick which one you'll want to do that one with Smile

I realized while laying in bed wide awake at 5 in the morning that I should have looked through my pictures folders instead of hoping to find something on dA.

Also, I realized that Terri, from Glee, has curly hair and that I'm deadly jealous of them.

So, here's my reference picture: http://s55.photobucket.com/albums/g142/Guiltygirl92666/?action=view&current=reference.jpg

Ah in my defense I will say this...it was 1:18am when I made that post Very Happy ^_^;;

Okie dokie so for my reference I be using this, because it's so curcly and bouncy and messy

And for my base, I choose Hollay's Cameo revamped because I have issues in general with drawing hair on this particular base and I may as well take the opportunity to fix that ^_^

Okay then! Very Happy I'll just assume Ashlyn had a base picked out Smile

Step one is about learning from your reference pic. What you're going to do is take your picture and draw on it Very Happy The idea to do this came from a friend who told me to do the same thing when I was struggling with pixelling curly hair.

Pick three colors for your palette: 1 base color and 2 shadows (it might be wise to pick a different color than the image, so you can tell it apart from what's below it). Don't worry about highlights at this point. Please be sure to resize the image so it's at a manageable size and is similar to the size it'd be on your base. Now, draw over the hair in the image so that you can see what it'd look like if it was pixelled! The point of this is to learn how the shapes and shading works in curly hair, and pixelling over an image is a great way to help learn (remember though that tracing is not something that should be published; don't post this to your DA xD). These can be rough, you don't need to clean them up to be perfect.

When you're done, post your traced-over images here, and tell me some things you learned about how curly hair is different from straight hair Very Happy

For example, this is what my pixelled over image looks like:

To do:
-Red carpet collab (40%)
-Vintage collab (100%)
-Maggot's auction win (100%)

Here's my try:

Also... Turquoise hair for Terri Schuester? Such a baaaaaaaaad idea XD

Anyway. Is it ok? I thought it'd be easier with a very flashy color.

I wanted to know, do you recommand to do this if we're trying some kind of hairdo that we're not sure about?

And, I learned that curly hair are shaded much in a circular type of shading than flat. I mean, I knew it. But, I don't know, it was as if I wasn't applying it or something. And I learned that I'm retarded. I'll do one side of the head without problem and when I try to do the second, I can't. I don't remember or understand how I did the first. Even when there's 5 minutes between each part. So yeah, I'm retarded.

God. This probably doesn't make sense. I'm too tired I think. Kamirose, don't hesitate to ask me to clarify some things I might have said that were confusing. I'll read myself tomorrow and probably won't understand half of what I wrote so... Yeah, I'm retarded.

I changed my piccy because after trying to do hat I originally chose a cuple of times, it just wasn't doing anything...I think being it was a wig that had clearly been squished up, it just doesn't feel like natural hair even to draw. Anyhoo, I found another piccy with natural messy curls and did that instead Smile

Haha you can tell I'm on the ball lately can't you Very Happy

I learned that in curly hair, an orderly "pattern" in the shape of the curls themselves is not always the best way. Messier curls like this are often very random. I also found the position of the shading is not as regular as one might find in straighter hair...highlights showing underneath where in straight hair you could expect to find shadows and vice versa. Example, previously when shading hair I would take into account my light source, and any accesories casting shadows, but here I've learned that taking into account the shadows the hair is casting on other bits of hair is equally as important when shading curls

Are you going to post the second part soon? You said you'll do it, like, a week ago.
